As an ex-employee of Swansea Libraries, I am pleased to find a (semi) official blog of Swansea public libraries, as written by Paige Turner (ahem). At long last the place is getting a new central library (been promised for around 50 years!) Indeed when I was there they have this great design competition for a new library, picked a winner and then said, nah, actually we don’t like that, and we’ve decided not to build a new library anyway. Classic. I remember the building looking a bit out there, but I kind of liked it, as it would have brought people to look at it. But, what do I know!
The old building does have a charm of its own mind you. The ref in particular which is a wonderful circular room with a domed roof.
I’m suddenly nostalgic for those oh so fun days stuck in the basement/file room trying to put the Deffett Francis collection in order, breathing in all that healthy dust, and finding odd books. Actually, this is a bit embarrassing, but I did take one of the books home to read and never returned it I realised recently whilst looking through an old box of books – sorry Swansea.
