The Guardian has an article on RFID in libraries which looks at the use of radio-frequency identification in Colchester Library in Essex, and how staff say this is revolutionising borrowing, by introducing self service into the library. Michelle Jones, libraries manager of Essex county council said the move to RFID would not result in job loses, just librarian’s role changing: “Now my staff are able to move about and help people and get more involved in activities within the library. We have not laid off any staff, but we do envisage running small self-service libraries in outlying areas with this technology.”
Sadly, I think it is naive to think that a roll out of RFID will not lead to staff loses. This is not to say that should prevent libraries from rolling out RFID.
