A lesson in how to endear oneself to a Judge comes this week from William Smith, a partner with Chicago-based McDermott Will & Emery LLP, who had been granted permission to represent Mount Sinai Medical Center of Greater Miami in a case against the trustee of a shuttered, former rival hospital, South Beach Community Hospital, in a Florida Court (Mr Smith is not licenced to practice in Florida).
Anyway, during a hearing on 7th May, Mr Smith came out with the cracking line of “I suggest with respect, Your Honor, that you’re a few french fries short of a Happy Meal in terms of what’s likely to take place.”
According to Judge Laurel Myerson Isicoff in court documents, Mr. Smith’s comment represents “conduct that appears to be inconsistent with the requirements of professional conduct,” and ordered Mr. Smith to appear before her on 25th June “to show cause why he should not be suspended from practice before this court.”
