I got an email this morning from Jaiku telling me that they were now part of the Google family. Must admit, as when Google nabbed Jotspot, this caught me a bit by surprise. I actually really like Jaiku although as I have had a hard time getting people off Twitter, I only really tend to post directly to it when Twitter is down – although it is set up to pick up feeds from my blogs and Twitter when I am not posting, so my Jaiku feed isn’t a bad way to follow me.
Why did Google pass over Twitter ? (created by the same people responsible for that other google purchase Blogger). Hard to say, although I think that Jaiku has been positioning itself more as a mobile company and Google is currently ALL about the mobile space.
As usual with google, they have decided to close new user sign-ups for now (Jotspot has been closed to new sign-ups for over a year now, so don’t hold your breath here). So, the big question is does this mean Twitter and even Pownce are going to be snapped up too? I’m not sure it does (at least for now). But people will certainly be watching what Google has planned for Jaiku very closely.
