According the BBC site, Press Complaints Commission director Tim Toulmin has told a conference that Blogs and other internet sites should be covered by a voluntary code of practice similar to that for newspapers in the UK. He spoke out against any attempts to let government regulate the internet but said unless there was a voluntary code of conduct there would be no form of redress for people angered at content.
I’m not sure this is true. Many of the blogs I know have the ability to leave comments which allows for some redress; and there are traditional forms of legal redress if someone believes they have been defamed etc online. I am also, because the BBC didn’t print more of his comments just how wide his scope was – all internet sites? What would this COP say? Would it just be something like Charlene Li’s bloggers code of ethics for example ?
