Well I decided to get the horrid thing off my pc last night. Should be easy enough I thought. Wrong.
I used control panel and went in to Add/remove programs, highlighted SP2 and way we go … And all was going well, until restoring catalogs and then … up pops a box saying “The system cannot find the file specified”. Click ok and “service pack 2 was not uninstalled”. I tried again, 3 times, same thing.
So, let’s get this straight. Applying the ‘fix’ totally screws up my ability to use my web browsers, and when i try and remove the thing it wont actually let me do it. Fantastic. I really do have to take my hat off to MS on this one – genius.
So, it was on to the back-up plan, and into System Restore. Picked my restore point -when I put the dreaded SP2 on the pc, and off we went again. A re-boot and what do you know, my browsers work fine again, suddenly www.google.com works! and I don’t have to type http://188.8.131.52 .
So, the moral of this story for me, is that SP2 is not going anywhere near my OS until all the bugs have been found and I know that if I do put it back on, that I can actually get on the web without knowing every numeric IP address for any site I want to use.
