Microsoft Windows Genuine Disadvantage spyware (sorry, my mistake Advantage). You may have seen the update in your Microsoft updates. Now among other things this gives Microsoft the power to potentially cripple your PC remotely if they decide that your version of Windows is not ‘genuine’, and to phone home at regular intervals to feed Microsoft info about your computer use. Now, as a result of people being concerned about privacy and the general spyware nature of the update, Microsoft decided to back down from making the update compulsory, so it is now a non compulsory update.
So if you have a pirate copy, no need to run the update and tell Microsoft; but if your copy is genuine all you need to do is re-activate ActiveX (oh, I know a previous MS update deactivated it as it was being used to drive trucks through by people trying to hack machines etc, but for Microsoft to protect you better they need to make your machine less safe first) Oh, and you might need to disable your firewall too to let the update run. Once you’ve done that it is now part of the OS and there to stay, and report back to the mothership.
Of course you don’t have to install it … Oh, unless you want to update to the latest version of Windows Media Player etc, then it seems you have to first install the non compulsory WGA. Hard to think of a better reason for using itunes (you don’t need an ipod to use the player); Real Player; WinAmp; or Songbird isn’t it
